Sarah Keating’s vision for the Phoenix Salon & Spa when it opened in March 2005 was to create “A Salon with A Cause.” Since its inception, the Phoenix has aspired to set itself apart from the typical Salon and Day Spa business model. The staff of the Phoenix collectively believe that people look and feel their best, not only when they are taking care of themselves and attempting to minimize the stresses of daily life, but when they are doing something to effect constructive change. According to Sarah, she feels invigorated, healthy, and energized most when she is working to influence someone else’s life in a positive manner. “It is an energy that can not come from anything else.”

Sarah is a Philadelphia native, attended the public schools, as well as the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated cum laude with an individualized major in environmental law. Upon her completion of law school at the George Washington University School of Law, she became a member of the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and District of Columbia Bars. She then went to work in the Government Regulation Section of the firm Morgan, Lewis and Bockius, in Washington, D.C. Following her private practice experience, she transitioned to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region III (EPA), in Philadelphia, where she worked for 17 years. Initially, Sarah acted as a civil enforcement attorney representing the EPA’s Hazardous Waste Division. She later moved to the Criminal Division, acting as a Senior Regional Criminal Enforcement Counsel, representing the Agency’s criminal enforcement program. She was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and handled cases in that District as well as in West Virginia, Delaware, and the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Sarah also spends a significant portion of her work day acting as the Director of Marketing for the Phoenix Condominiums (www.phillyphoenix.com). The relationship between the Salon and the Phoenix Condominiums fosters the charitable work that both organizations are involved in, and the Phoenix Building serves as the extraordinary venue for the events hosted and sponsored by the two intertwined groups.

Sarah is an active member of the community and is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Rosemont School of the Holy Child and the Institute for Blood and Cancer Disease. She currently serves as an Honorary Board Member for the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), the Children’s Medical Foundation of Central and Eastern Europe (CMFCEE) and Calcutta House (an AIDS treatment and care organization). She is involved in fund-raising events for several other worthy organizations including the Abrahamson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the City of HOPE’s National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute, the Institute for Breast and Prostate Health, as well as Project H.O.M.E. in Philadelphia. Several events at the Phoenix have benefited these worthy organizations, among others.

The Salon’s “Women Empowering Women” Event, held in March 2006 and May 2007, has become an annual event at the Phoenix. It involves an exciting designer fashion show showcasing formerly homeless women as models, and has served as both a fundraiser and to inspire all who participated to work together to help break the cycle of homelessness in Philadelphia.

Sarah’s goal is to utilize the resources of the business and its clients, as well as the talented and professional staff of the Phoenix Salon and Spa to effect change in the community, to generate awareness of the compelling issues that surround us all, and to empower others to become involved in supporting these worthy causes.

She and her husband Dan live in Gladwyne, are also busy with the lives of their six children and dog.
